Telecommunication Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

for Administration, Faculty and Staff

Using School Computerized Equipment, Network, and the Internet

School Year 2007-08

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

This policy applies to all RYSS faculty, administration, and staff users of computer equipment, printers, networked copiers, electronic information, electronic services, and campus network.

By using or accessing School telecommunication facilities or services, the user agrees to abide by the school’s AUP policy.  Access to and use of campus computer equipment, network, and the Internet should be considered a work benefit.  With this benefit come certain responsibilities.

Faculty, Administrators, and Staff are expected to:

<   abide by school technology procedures regarding computer equipment,
      network and Internet use, as well as, copyright regulations;

<   not allow others (teachers, teacher aides) to use individual network ID

<   not allow students to use individual network ID
<   handle and monitor School computer equipment as though it were your
      own property – take care of it;
<   use campus computer equipment, network and Internet for academic
      business related purposes only;

<        develop and post class pages that relate to school lesson plans and/or school
activities. You have full responsibility for class page content created by you or for you;

<   assure that each student has a current Technology Parent/Student
      Acknowledgement Form (AUP) on file prior to that student’s use of School
      computers;

<   train students in the proper use of the campus computer equipment and
      the Internet;

<   instruct students on campus expectations regarding appropriate use of
      equipment;

<   actively supervise students taken into the computer labs to complete lesson
      assignments, or allowed access to individual teacher classroom computers;

<   intervene, as needed, to assure appropriate student use of materials accessed
      through the Internet;

Authorized administrators may review electronic files and/or logs at any time, without reason or prior notice, to maintain system integrity and determine that users are acting responsibly or otherwise consistent with this policy.

The courts have upheld an employer’s right to electronically spot check on workers, since workers are using company equipment.

With advent of e-mail becoming a central part of our work place, all employees using the campus’ network will be required to stay attentive to their use of the school’s electronic facilities.

Issues that run parallel with this request are: a) a virus can grind the school to a halt. We are processing towards a greater portion of official school business with TEA being conducted over the Internet.  Network downtime can cause the school funding problems; b) the sending of text containing course language, inappropriate or offensive jokes among co-workers might open up the school to a lawsuit under sexual harassment laws.

At this time, the campus network is not monitoring employee network activities.  That strategy can change.  Monitoring the school network and PC system IPs could become necessary if we need to investigate inappropriate and/or misuse of the system.

Remember, PC systems located in the labs, classrooms and offices and the network are school property.  Monitoring will assist in thwarting bogus claims of harassment and verify real complaints.

<  access data not intended for the user including, but not limited to,
     administrative data and other teacher files;

<  allow students to use staff/teacher network ID**

<        circumvent the menu/password and/or Internet filtering software installed on PC systems;

     commercial business.

š      Users should not expect that any files stored on school-based computers are private.  Electronic messages and files stored on school-based computers are always regarded as property of the School.

Any violation of school policy and rules may result in immediate termination of school-provided access to computer equipment or the Internet.  A letter of reprimand will be added to the employee file.  Additional disciplinary action may be determined at the academy level in keeping with existing procedures and practices regarding inappropriate conduct. When and where applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved.
